How Do Children Learn Respect In Karate Class?

Websters dictionary defines respect as, “to consider worthy of high regard”. What types of respect are there? Respect for oneself and respect for others. Which is more important and how do you show or demonstrate respect?

First and foremost, we must start with respecting ourselves. Without self-respect you cannot have respect for other people. We should consider ourselves worthy of high regard both in body and spirit. We teach students to show respect for themselves by encouraging them to:

  • Use Positive Self Talk
  • Take pride in how they present themselves. In class their uniforms should be neat and wrinkle free and their belts tied properly.
  • They should use good personal hygiene. Hair, feet and body clean and they should use deodorant when they approach their tween years.
  • Students should turn in homework assignments on time.
  • They should work hard in class to get their best workout possible.
  • We have a saying: Leaders are Readers. Students are encouraged to read daily.
  • Students are expected to use Self-Discipline at Home. We define that as doing things their supposed too without being asked.

Self-respect is critical to developing confidence, and future success in life. It impacts everything from our relationships from our relationships with others to our health.

Respecting others is also extremely important in our curriculum and we discuss it in the very first class. Students are taught to show respect:

  • Bowing which is the oriental version of a handshake.
  • Make eye contact when speaking with someone or when listening to a parent or teacher speak to them.
  • They are taught to use the 7 words of respect: Please, Thank you, You’re Welcome, Yes Sir/Dad/Teacher, No Sir/Dad/Teacher, Yes Ma’am/Mom/Teacher, and No Ma’am/Mom/Teacher
  • And to follow the Golden Rule: Treat others the way they want to be treated!

Respect is an extremely important part of life and you must give and treat others with respect in order to receive respect. Our instructor’s model respectful behavior in every class so students understand what is expected and how they can do the same for others.
